From early studies by Beyer and Barton, Stephen Acabado, a Filipino UCLA anthropological archaeologist, points out that the terraces aren’t as old as they were originally thought of.
I came across an old paper I wrote for my Rural Communities in Transformation class years ago, which was sort of a mini-ethnography about the wedding tradition of an indigenous group in North Luzon. The title of the paper was Culture in the Postmodern World: The Kanyao Tradition of Kankanaeys. I read that paper again incidentally just a few days ago and was surprised by how well-written it was, considering I was just a nascent sophomore social anthro major then.
My uni campus is located at North Luzon, which is why most of the studies generated by the faculty and the students are from indigenous groups in the area. Philippines has a very diverse population though. An estimate of 14–17 million indigenous peoples belong to 110 ethnolinguistic groups and 33% of those are concentrated in Northern Luzon area.
I must say though that two of my favorite Philippine anthropological studies are Harold Conklin’s study on the Hanunuo colors and my dad’s study (yes, I’m biased) on the ethnobotany of Palaw’an.
Obviously, I can gush about the variety of anthropological studies in the country all day long. The Philippines is culturally diverse and such are the researches it brings about.
